JAEA's task is to provide the scientific and technical basis for safe geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste. This involves researches on development and improvement of techniques for characterization of the deep geological environment and a wide range of engineering for deep underground application in crystalline rock at "Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU)". MIU is currently being constructed. The Main and Ventilation Shafts had reached GL-460m. This report describes the summary of construction.

Current status of geological investigations of the MIU Project Phase II are summarized. Geological mapping, reverse VSP, Analog model simulation and so on, were conducted as Phase II investigations. As results of these investigations, the methodology for the evaluation of geological model constructed in Phase I could be presented.

In this paper, a part of the result of long-term monitoring, hydrogeological modeling and groundwater flow simulation in Phase 2 of MIU project were introduced. And, methodology of model calibration based on the data of hydraulic impacts in Phase 2 was summarized.

The JAEA is developing a knowledge management system (JAEA KMS) aiming at managing appropriately the knowledge that is the key to the geological disposal project. The JAEA considers that the JAEA KMS can facilitate effective integration and utilization of the knowledge that supports the safety of geological disposal. The prototype of the JAEA KMS has been made publicly available on the JAEA website since March 2010. A practical application of "Argumentation model" that is one of "management functions" of JAEA KMS will be introduced as the example of volcanic & geothermal effects on long-term stability of geological environment.
